Comments about the CD "Gedanken - Thoughts"

Ari Davidow wrote a very nice review on his klezmershack in May 2003

Klezmer-bassist Heiko Lehman wrote a review in German, for the website www.klezmer.de.
A translated excerpt from his review:

Heiko: ...the musicians explain their Gedanken as " are improvised musical explorations; a melody played as if beeing discovered for the first time, slowly revealing itself, sometimes exploding to fill our thoughts ... "
This concept is a strong part of Kurt Bjorling's way of working.
Both musicians serve this concept, wherein Annette provides the musical frame on the harp. Only this frame makes it possible for the clarinetist to develop, to take melodies apart and explore their essence.
...Kurt Bjorling is doubtless one of the best clarinetists of the international klezmer scene. This duo-project provides him with the possibility to realize potentials for which neither Chicago Klezmer Ensemble nor Brave Old World offer him a forum.
... For interested musicians there is much new (on the CD), a lot to hear and to learn.
A very introverted recording, recalling times when 'introverted' wasn't a bad word.
Duo Controverso has a concept and fullfills it without detours. (This CD is) strongly recommended .

Unique Sound & Instrumentation, an Exciting & Eclectic Repertoire...

... including traditional ethnic music, classical music, and original compositions. Their intimate accoustic sound spans a wide expressive range, inviting the listener to pause and enjoy music of quiet intensity and ecstatic energy in an otherwise loud and hurried world.

Duo Controverso interprets, arranges and improvises pieces based on traditional folk and ethnic music, such as East-European klezmer music, Turkish, Greek and Romanian dances, Jewish cantorial solos and Ottoman court music.

The classical repertoire of Duo Controverso ranges from baroque-era masters (J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Teleman) French impressionists (G.Fauré, C. Debussy, C. Saint-Saëns) to contemporary composers.

As there is hardly any music composed specifically for harp with either clarinet or basset horn, all of the repertoire has been adapted or composed by the performers themselves.

Listen to examples of their music in the "muziker.org listening center".

Duo Controverso performs for various occasions:
entertaining and educational concerts,
creating festive ambience and lively dance music.
